Ali
It was hard to tell who was more nervous – Ali or us.
We were anxious about putting ourselves in the hands of a stranger, and he was uneasy about guiding us.
We were his first English-speaking group, and that isn’t one of his stronger languages. But we helped him with his English, and his kindness and generosity quickly won us over.
Ali sports a shaved head and an earring in his left ear, and his sculpted body and handsome looks reminded us a little of Mr. Clean. He had immeasurable patience and calmly answered our questions and kept his composure — even when Patty and I were separated from the group for a half day.
Ali has a great sense of humor, which he demonstrated one day when we were cycling in the rain. He told us he thought the storm was clearing, and immediately a terrific peal of thunder shook the ground. Ali pointed to the sky and quipped, “Someone is listening.”
As a young man, Ali served in the Turkish army, parachuting into the mountains of eastern Turkey and hunting down and killing terrorists. That experience affected him, and he is no longer comfortable in big cities. So he lives in small villages, guides tourists on cycling tours, and does commercial diving in the off-season.
We grew attached to Ali and enjoyed his gentle nature and quiet sense of humor. And I think Ali enjoyed his time with us.
At the end of the tour, he gave us a hug, thanked us, and asked us to come back and see him again.
And I think he meant it; after all, he loves showing people his beautiful country, and he seems to be comfortable in his niche.
