Meeting Santa
We actually met Santa Claus one Christmas! Or, to be more accurate I should say we met a Santa Claus.
My wife Patty spotted him first, on Christmas morning, sitting across from us in the lobby of the Denver airport.
“That guy looks like Santa,” she whispered to me, “and he looks tired.”
She was right. He had white hair, a bushy white beard, and a plump stomach. And he did look tired.
We wound up standing next to him as we boarded the plane to Tulsa, and we asked him about the resemblance.
“I’ve been working as Santa at a shopping center in Bakersfield the past five weeks,” he told us. “Now I’m on my way home. It will be good to sleep in my own bed tonight.”
The flight attendants were in a cheerful mood, despite having to work on Christmas. The holiday seems to bring out the best in people. One of them got on the intercom shortly after we took off and announced that a first-class seat was waiting for Santa Claus, who surely needed it after a hard night’s work.
Our new friend pushed his call attendant light, and when the attendant asked him what he needed, he said he was ready for his first-class seat.
The last we saw of our new friend was the back of his jacket as he left the coach cabin and headed to first class.
“Ho, ho, ho!”
“Merry Christmas!”
