Jeff’s Legacy

Filed under: Colorful Characters — Dale @ 3:17 pm

Jeff Britt died in February, from pancreatic cancer, and the world will be a less colorful place without him. Jeff was an avid gardener, and orchid specialist, and a wonderful friend.

I first met Jeff a couple of years ago when a friend recommended him to me. I needed help getting our garden ready for Easter, and there was too much work for me to finish in time. In addition, my garden was “tired” and so was I. I had maintained it by myself for more than 20 years, and I was doing the same things over-and-over, with little imagination or innovation. So I contacted Jeff for help.

Jeff came and looked at my garden. He thought it looked good, but it needed a few new things and some of the plants could be moved to places where they would do better. He also thought there could be more light if a couple of the trees were trimmed back.

That started a relationship that grew and flourished. I immediately liked Jeff, and we became good friends as we worked together in my small garden.

I knew Jeff had worked for Rod McLellan, an orchid specialist, and I knew he knew a lot about orchids. But what I didn’t know was that Jeff was a world-renown orchid specialist.

Jeff worked for Rod McLellan for 26 years, and he rose to become president and CEO. As an orchid breeder, Jeff created some of the most widely-distributed and popular orchids in the world. His expertise in orchids took him around the world, where he spoke at conferences and symposia and he consulted with numerous orchid nurseries.

Jeff also created a garden for himself, which is a virtual paradise! Jeff’s garden is featured in books about small gardens, and it has appeared in Martha Stewart Living. It was one of his great loves, and he spent his final days there — in the space he created — with his friends and his beloved little dog, D-fer.

I know that Jeff is better off now. He’s not in pain, and more than likely he’s teaching God about orchids.

Thank you, Jeff, for helping me with my garden! Your legacy is everywhere I look, and it will always remind me of you. And thank you for your friendship! You left a wonderful legacy!
